While we’ve all sheltered in place for safety during the COVID Crisis, another “shadow pandemic” has emerged – that of violence against women.

According to the United Nations, “Since the outbreak of COVID-19, emerging data and reports from those on the front lines, have shown that all types of violence against women and girls, particularly domestic violence, has intensified.”

Orange the World

This year’s theme is “Orange the World.  Fund, Respond, Prevent, Collect!”  November 25th will begin 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.  As the world has gone into lockdown, acts of violence have spiked here in the US and around the globe.

Students at Bulkeley High School got an early start on their 16 days, beginning with a display in the main hall of Bulkeley’s Graduate Campus.  Students in Mrs. Vargas-Castillo’s classes worked to create this butterfly-themed presentation to increase awareness of the issue.  The butterfly is a prominent symbol in the fight against domestic violence, symbolizing the journey from victim to survivor.
